Education

Lamar University's five dormitory complexes have pushed the university over the 14,000 enrollment level and positioned it as a true regional center. The university continues its excellence which has it noted for its science, engineering and education programs.

The university offers than 100 programs of study that lead to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Students can choose from among more than 130 student clubs, organizations, honor societies, fraternities, and sororities. Among its famed research programs, Lamar faculty and students have successfully participated in NASA shuttle flight experiments, supplying critical equipment to NASA projects. Work continues in rocket research and resource development for future lunar manned bases

Lamar State College - Port Arthur
Now nearly 100 years old, Lamar State College -Port Arthur has topped the 3,000 student mark. An impressive construction program has helped the outside picturecollege keep up with growing student population and a push for online courses has made its education program even easier to access. Lamar State College - Port Arthur provides students with the first two years of a university education close to home and close to work.

The college offers Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees in Academic Studies, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Home Economics, Substance Abuse Counseling/Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate, Surgical Technology/Surgical Technology Certificate, Upward Mobility Nursing and Licensed Vocational Nursing(Certificate only)

Lamar Intstitute of Technology
Since 1997 LIT's enrollment has gone from 1,300 to 2,500. It now awards more Science and Technology 2-year degrees than any two-year campus in the nation. Known locally as "the Institute," LIT is a true regional center for technical training. It offers hands-on training coupled with general education courses in 27 Associate of Applied Science Degree programs, 26 certificate programs, and programs in Workforce Training, Adult, and Continuing Education.

Lee College
Located in Baytown and with an enrollment of more than 6,000, Lee College has earned a reputation in the Houston market for its quality education. Through a variety of programs and services, Lee College prepares students for success in higher education or employment. Lee College also provides a broad-based program of extension courses, distance education, adult education, continuing education and community service.

Jasper Higher Education and Technology Center
This new center offers college course from several higher education institutions for Jasper and the lakes areas of Southeast Texas. Angelina College in Lufkin has taken the lead in managing the educational center. Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches offers degree plans though the Bachelor and Master levels. Vocational / Technical Programs can be set up to match the needs of local businesses and prepare individuals for companies locating in the area.

a two-year public community college, located in Lufkin, Texas, on Highway 59S in the heart of the piney woods. Statewide, community colleges provide the first two years of higher education for more than 70 percent of college freshmen and sophomores. Angelina College averages about 5,000 students during the fall and spring semesters in academic and technical programs.

Stephen F. Austin University
The campus of Stephen F. Austin State University is located in the heart of Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas. With a student body of approximately 11,500, SFA is large enough to offer an array of fields of study, while also providing students with individual attention.

Associated Builders and Contractors
The ABC Construction Training Center in Nederland has regularly scheduled craft training classes in core, electrical, instrumentation, millwright, boilermaker, pipefitting, civil carpentry, industrial painting, industrial insulation, welding and construction site safety technician.


Region 5 Education Service Center
-- serves the school districts of Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson Orange, Newton and Tyler counties plus High Island ISD. Approximately 87,000 students and more than 6,100 educators are the clients of Region 5 ESC. The center's mission is to assist school districts in improving student performance while promoting greater efficiency and effectiveness. The center's divisions include administrative leadership, educational technology and media, special education, instructional services, information management, and business services. More than seventy programs and services are offered within the divisions listed and are provided in response to school district needs.

Tech Prep Consortium
Tech-Prep is a partnership formed among secondary schools, area business/industry/labor, community leaders, parents, students and post secondary institutions. The primary goal is to ensure that students leave high school with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to participate in a high skills, high wage economy and to participate fully as productive members of their commumunities.

The SBDC Provides free professional business management consulting and high quality business information seminars for the benefit of the small business community in Southeast Texas.


Lamar State Collge (Port Arthur)
Small Business Development Center
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Lamar State College Port Arthur provides small business with the practical assistance needed to survive, grow, and prosper. The SBDC works to support economic development in Port Arthur, Groves, Nederland, and Port Neches by providing counseling, training, and technical assistance to owners and managers of new and existing small businesses. The SBDC services are usually offered free of charge.

The total number of public independent school districts in Southeast Texas for the school year 1999-2000 was 39 according to the Texas Education Agency. The overall average daily attendance for the same year was 97,625.

Enrollment: School enrollment data from the 2000 Census showed that there were 143,868 persons in the population who were 3 years of age and older and enrolled in school in the study area during the census collection period.
